Fleet management and transport solutions provider, Teletrac Navman, has won the 2019 Heavy Vehicle Industry Award for Safety Innovation with its pioneering electronic work diary, Sentinel.

The win marks another milestone achievement for the fleet management provider which has been at the forefront of Australian telematics for over a decade.

“We are thrilled that Sentinel has won not only this year’s Safety Innovation Award but the Eastern Region Safety Innovation award,” Ian Daniel, Vice President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific at Teletrac Navman said at the 2019 HVIA National Awards Night, held in Brisbane.

“We created Sentinel over 10 years ago to provide a safer work environment for heavy vehicle drivers and the public, while making compliance easier and more efficient for operators. We now have over 35,000 drivers actively using the solution

“The technology is the first of its kind in Australia, developed to aide truck drivers and other heavy vehicle operators to track their trip electronically, mitigating the need for cumbersome paper-based work dairies. We consulted with drivers, customers and industry figureheads to beta test Sentinel, ensuring we created a solution that would combat real industry issues. The technology helps drivers make fatigue management decisions in real time, enabling them to review their trips and plan breaks accordingly.”

Sentinel is designed to function in even the most remote environments across Australia as it doesn’t require an internet connection or mobile reception, a concept embraced by the industry.

Manufacturer and supplier of industrial chemicals, Formula Chemicals, have been using Sentinel in its fleet of transport vehicles since April 2018.

“We introduced Teletrac Navman into our fleet in April 2018 and the value it adds to our operation is unquestionable," said Leigh Smart, Director of Formula Chemicals and Chairman of Road Freight NSW.

"The feedback from drivers has been very positive," he said. "It is user friendly and it is a powerful tool in scheduling and assisting payroll for accurate driving times. In terms of compliance it has a variety of different reporting systems which can be very beneficial for checking idle times and speeding.”

Given how adaptable the technology is, Sentinel can be implemented seamlessly across several industries and sectors as a process improvement solution. The innovation is currently being used by one particular transport provider to improve accounting and payroll by offering accurate driving times. Sentinel is also a powerful planning tool, helping operators better allocate and schedule jobs based on a driver’s hours.

Sentinel is just one part of Teletrac Navman’s complete fleet management platform, promoting improved efficiency and productivity across the industry with the use of data analytics. The data can provide insights for maintenance or driver score-carding, and the electronic work diaries add powerful work and rest data to better manage drivers, fleets and customer contracts. The technology is currently undergoing approval checks at the NHVR as a voluntary replacement of paper-based work diaries.
