Former ATA chair Trevor Martyn fought the good fight.
Former ATA chair Trevor Martyn fought the good fight.

TREVOR Martyn may have long since retired from the business side of trucking.

But the legend of dangerous goods hauling and safety standards is still pulling strings behind the scenes in more ways than one.

For the past few years the now 73-year-old has played a pivotal role as chair of the judging panel for the National Trucking Industry Awards.

And since picking up the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the road transport industry - one of the highlights in a career overflowing with accolades - Trevor's former colleagues at the VTA and National Bulk Tanker Association are hoping to enlist his expertise again, time permitting.

Trevor, who ran his own business, FBT Operations, for 38 years, admits he does miss the cut-and-thrust of a full-time frontline office role at times.

But he's more than happy to let the "youngsters” put their hands up nowadays, while he indulges his passion for fishing and aged care as director and chairman of Mayflower, a burgeoning group of high-end facilities in Melbourne and Sydney.

"We fought the good fight and did everything that was asked of us professionally,” said Trevor, whose many boardroom roles included chairing the Australian Trucking Association from 2006-2010.

"We couldn't have done any better if we'd tried.”

Current ATA chair Geoff Crouch said he couldn't think of a more deserving recipient of an OAM.

"Trevor has put an enormous amount of time into the ATA and the safety of our industry over the years,” Mr Crouch said. "His commitment to safety and best practice is legendary.”
